Creating Data Models in PowerPivot

Creating a data model in PowerPivot is an important step. Basically if you want to work with any data first of all you're going to have to get the data into PowerPivot. You know, that when you work with Pivot Tables Excel automatically creates the data model behind the scenes. But what if you want to import data from Access, SQL or even another Excel spreadsheet.

Creating Data Models in PowerPivot

Try the following:

  1. Open Excel and click on the PowerPivot tab.
  2. Click on Manage to swap to PowerPivot.
  3. Click on the From data source drop down list and choose Access database.
  4. In the Friendly Connection Name the word Access should be displayed.
  5. Click on the Browse button to the right of the Database name box and find the Access datbase. You can download the Access database from the Computer Tutoring site.
  6. Click Next.
  7. Ensure the first radio button is selected. The one that says Select from a list of tables and views to choose the data to import.
  8. Click Next.
  9. Select the tables that you want to import by selecting the check boxes.
  10. Click on finish.

Your data will have been imported.
